Is Florastor better than other brands who sell the probiotic saccharomyces boulardii? Saccharomyces boulardii has over 580 peer reviewed published studies -it is a GREAT probiotic. It helps to rebalance yeast and recover antibiotic associated diarrhea, it is a great probiotic to use with SIBO, SIFO and Candida – among other things: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=saccharomyces+boulardii
Florastor combines Saccharomyces boulardii and lactose into their product and then commissioned studies on their brand named product. They then shared these studies with doctors and nurses. The fact that this BRAND has been studied is used to ‘set it apart’ – it is ‘well studied’ – but really, Saccharomyces boulardii is WELL STUDIED with 582 peer reviewed published studies. Florastor also doesn’t specify how many cfu (colony forming units) of Saccharomyces boulardii is actually in their product. It would be good to know this, so we know how much we are dosing. Instead, they list milligrams, which really isn’t helpful. AND Florastor has titanium dioxide in it – which is a neurotoxic agent. As a clinician I do not understand why anyone would want to take a product with lactose (especially if you have SIBO) or titanium dioxide in it, when you can get straight Saccharomyces boulardii from pharmaceutical grade supplement companies like Klaire Labs, Kirkman Labs, Pure Encapsulations, etc…
